Newark firefighter, Augusto Acabou died while fighting the July 5th fire aboard the Grande Costa d’Avorio, an Italian-flagged vessel carrying thousands of vehicles and other goods that was docked at Port Newark. This 12-story cargo ship, The Grande Costa D’avorio, burned for six-days before being fully extinguished. Tragically the fire claimed the lives of both Acabou and Brooks and injured at least six other firefighters.
For the Acabou family, the loss of the always positive and persistent eldest Acabou broke up the trio of brothers who had played sports together through the Newark school system, especially at Eastside High School where they cheered “Augie” through his every triumph. Brothers Miguel “Mike,” a former Newark police officer and now police captain in nearby Clark Township; and John, a computer programmer, reflected on their loss in somber tones and glowing memories.
Acabou is survived by his longtime girlfriend and several family members. Through the generosity of our donors, we had the honor of hand-delivering vital resources to help ease their financial hardship while mourning.
There's always a way to be a bright light for the families of fallen First Responders.
